Create situations where you adapt to the unexpected and even if it’s the best or worst scenario and treat it as a way you can go for the better next time around.

Let’s face it, the tech world is all about planning. Roadmaps, sprints, agile methodologies and scrum(ha-ha) it’s a structured dance with the future. But what about when life throws you a curveball? When your day(or in my case a long night shift) job is as unpredictable as a rogue wave and your tech dreams are on the horizon? That’s when real-world planning meets digital ambition.

I’m currently navigating the choppy waters of a full-time casual job in a non-tech role. It’s a classic case of ‘hustling hard while I build my tech empire.’ It’s a rollercoaster, to say the least. One day I’m cleaning vents, roof fans and canopies and the next I’m doing my best to attempt deep-diving into code and upskilling. While it’s certainly not the ideal path to tech stardom, it’s forging a unique perspective that’s shaping my approach to planning.

Originally, I had set out to use this time to intensively upskill in various tech domains. But life had other plans. My quality of life took a significant hit. Simple things like consistent eating, hydration, and restful sleep became elusive. It became clear that before I could sprint towards my tech goals, I needed to prioritize my physical and mental well-being.

Now, as I’m beginning to recover, I’m focused on clearing my mental debt of outstanding programming projects and overhauling my portfolio. It’s been a brutal three weeks of 3-5 hours of sleep on average, but I’m determined to emerge from this phase stronger and more focused than ever. My goal is to have my mental roadmap for a tech job paying off in the coming weeks or months, well before the year ends.
Balancing my average 9-12 hour night shift with my tech aspirations has been a formidable challenge. The irregular sleep patterns and demanding physical work have tested my limits. However, I’m determined to overcome these obstacles and transform them into stepping stones towards my tech career.

Here’s the thing: Unexpected challenges are inevitable. Whether it’s a sudden shift in your job schedule, a bug that crashes your side project, or a global pandemic, life has a knack for throwing curveballs. So, how do we, as tech enthusiasts and aspiring professionals, prepare for the unexpected?

* Embrace Flexibility: Rigid plans are like building a house on quicksand. Be ready to adapt. Your tech project roadmap might need a detour, and your job schedule could change overnight. Flexibility is your secret weapon.

* Prioritize Effectively: Not all tasks are created equal. Focus on high-impact activities. When things get chaotic, it’s easy to get overwhelmed. Prioritize tasks based on their importance and urgency.

* Build a Strong Support Network(this one’s a tough one): Surround yourself with people who believe in you. A supportive network can be a lifeline during tough times. Whether it’s friends, family, or online communities, having people to lean on is crucial.

* Leverage Technology: Ironically, technology can be a lifesaver when things go awry. Use tools like project management software, time management apps, and cloud storage to stay organized and efficient.

Remember, setbacks are not failures. They’re opportunities to learn and grow. By embracing the unexpected and planning smart, you can turn challenges into stepping stones towards your tech goals.
