Learning how to be an adult later in life and fuelling rekindled ambition.
Calling all Code Crusaders and Digital Renegades! ⚔️ Feeling lost in the labyrinth of your late 20s career quest? Ever dreamt of slaying the dragon of unemployment and conquering the kingdom of Aussie tech, only to be met with a moat of rejection letters? Been there, downloaded that patch (several times). 🇦🇺
But fear not, fellow adventurers! Today’s post is your digital compass, guiding you through the treacherous terrain of setbacks and limitations.
Let’s talk about the not-so-glamorous side of adulting: setbacks and limitations. It happens to the best of us. Take yours truly, for example. I (your friendly neighbourhood tech blogger) did a whole university dance – enrolled, switched majors, felt the “meh,” and eventually dipped out before the graduation confetti rained down. Big whoopsie, right?
Fast forward, and here I am, a software bootcamp grad (congrats, me!) who chased the big tech dream in Sydney, only to face a wall of rejection letters. Talk about a reality check. Financially, things got tight, and even with supportive friends and family, that feeling of being utterly alone can be a doozy.
Here’s the thing: setbacks are inevitable. They’re part of the learning journey. But here’s the good news:
- Setbacks can be stepping stones. Did that uni dropout make me feel like a failure? Absolutely. But it also pushed me to find a more focused path in tech.
- Limits are there for a reason. Burning the candle at both ends sounds productive, but burnout is real. Recognizing your limits helps you prioritize what matters most – your health, your well-being, and ultimately, your success.
So, what do we do with all this?
- Embrace the “yet.” Didn’t land that dream job this time around? That’s okay, you haven’t yet. Keep learning, keep refining your skills, and keep showing up – the right opportunity will find you.
- Celebrate the wins, big and small. Finishing bootcamp? That’s awesome! Mastering a new coding concept? High fives all around!
- Build your support system. Surround yourself with people who believe in you, even when you doubt yourself. Family, friends, online communities – they’re your cheerleaders.
Look, our late 20s might feel like a whirlwind of figuring things out. But with each setback, we learn, we adapt, and come back stronger. And hey, if you’re a fellow Kiwi chasing tech dreams in Oz or overseas, hit me up in the comments! Let’s commiserate, celebrate, and navigate this crazy journey together.
But here’s the kicker: When you have those burning career ambitions, there will be moments you want to throw in the towel. But that’s when you gotta double down, not backpedal. It’s like training for a marathon – there will be days you just want to stay in bed. But with a supportive foundation, whether it’s your exceptional family, your ride-or-die friends, or that unwavering desire deep down (like yours!), you can push through.
Speaking of inner fire, I love that you’re embracing your “inner persona” and channelling that into your ambition. That’s powerful stuff!
Look, the Sydney rejections are just a bump in the road, not a dead end. Now you know what’s up, and you’re fuelled by that inner desire. That’s a recipe for success, my friend.
- Level up your job hunt. Let’s be honest, applying for jobs can feel like throwing resumes into a black hole. But it’s a numbers game! Focus on tailoring your applications to each specific role, highlighting relevant skills and experiences.
- Network like a champ. The tech world thrives on connections. Start by reaching out to people in your field on LinkedIn or attend industry meetups (online or in-person). Don’t just ask for a job – offer to connect, learn from their experiences, and build genuine relationships. Your portfolio is your tech resume on steroids. Ditch the generic templates and infuse it with your personality! Showcase your best projects, explain your thought process, and don’t be afraid to get creative.
- Polish your portfolio. Your portfolio is your tech resume on steroids. Ditch the generic templates and infuse it with your personality! Showcase your best projects, explain your thought process, and don’t be afraid to get creative.
Turning setbacks into stepping stones:
- Skill up, power up! Feeling a little burnt out from job hunting? Don’t waste that energy! When you’re feeling up to it, dedicate some time to honing your tech skills. There are tons of fantastic free resources out there, like FreeCodeCamp and The Odin Project.
- Consider personalised guidance. If you have the budget and are looking for a more structured approach, professional career consulting can be a substantial investment.
Adulting: Sometimes it Means Taking a Detour.
Let’s be honest, sometimes the dream job search takes a little longer than expected. Big props to you for listening to your outstanding support system (friends and family are the best hype squad you could ask for!). Taking a temporary job to stabilize things financially is a mature and responsible move. Remember, it’s just a pit stop – you’re still grinding for your ultimate career trophy while building a financial safety net. Plus, who knows, you might even learn some unexpected skills to add to your professional arsenal!
- Gratitude is key. Take a moment to appreciate the people who have your back. A supportive network makes all the difference during tough times. Let them know how much you appreciate their advice and encouragement.
- This is your journey, own it! Don’t compare your path to others. Everyone’s career journey is unique, with its own twists and turns. Embrace the setbacks as learning experiences, and keep that inner fire burning bright. You’ve got this!
Mastering Time Management:
Balancing a demanding job, personal life, and career ambitions can be challenging, but effective time management can make a world of difference. Here are some tips to help you stay on track:
- Prioritize tasks. Identify what’s most important and tackle those tasks first. Use tools like to-do lists or apps to keep track of your priorities.
- Set realistic goals. Break down your larger goals into smaller, manageable tasks. This makes them less overwhelming and easier to achieve.
- Create a schedule. Allocate specific time slots for different activities, including work, study, and relaxation. Stick to your schedule as much as possible to maintain a healthy balance.
- Avoid multitasking. Focus on one task at a time to improve efficiency and reduce errors. Multitasking can often lead to decreased productivity.
- Take breaks. Regular breaks can help you stay focused and prevent burnout. Use techniques like the Pomodoro Technique to manage your work and break intervals.
- Learn to say no. It’s important to recognise your limits and not over-commit. Saying no to additional tasks or responsibilities can help you maintain a manageable workload.
Prioritizing Mental Health:
Navigating setbacks can take a toll on your mental health. Here are some strategies to help you stay mentally resilient:
- Practice self-care. Make time for activities that you enjoy and that help you relax. This could be anything from reading a book to going for a walk.
- Stay connected. Reach out to friends, family, or online communities. Sharing your experiences and feelings can provide emotional support and reduce feelings of isolation.
- Seek professional help if needed. If you’re feeling overwhelmed, consider talking to a mental health professional. Therapy or counselling can provide valuable tools and strategies for coping.
- Maintain a healthy lifestyle. Regular exercise, a balanced diet, and adequate sleep can significantly affect your mental well-being.
- Mindfulness and meditation. Practices like mindfulness and meditation can help you stay grounded and manage stress more effectively.
And here’s a little anecdote: I need to practice what I preach. Writing this post reminded me of the importance of these strategies. Just like you, I face setbacks and need to manage my time and mental health. It’s a continuous journey, and we’re all in this together.
Remember, your career path is an adventure, not a straight line. There will be detours, dead ends, and moments where you want to throw in the map (or the digital compass in this case!). But with a supportive network, a dash of self-belief, and a willingness to learn, you’ll find your way through the maze and emerge stronger on the other side. Now, go forth and conquer that career dragon – just don’t forget to celebrate the little wins along the way!
