Breaking my “Weaknesses” and turning procrastination into my greatest strength.

Hey there, fellow tech enthusiasts! July 1st has rolled around, and you know what that means? A fresh start! (Except for maybe the lingering fireworks smoke, here in some parts of the world.)

For many of us (myself included), a new month brings a renewed sense of purpose. It’s a chance to self-reflect and make improvements. And let’s be honest, for launching a software development career, there’s always room for improvement, especially for us reformed (or reforming) serial procrastinators.

Lost in the Land of Brain Fog:

We all have them – those periods where we started strongly with motivation, only to fizzle out faster than a sparkler. Maybe you completed a coding bootcamp, emerged feeling empowered, and then… crickets. Suddenly, the fire that ignited your desire to become a developer seems to have vanished.

This, my friends, can be a symptom of several things. It could be low-key burnout, that feeling of exhaustion that creeps in when you’re constantly pushing yourself but not seeing the results you crave. But for me, I’m starting to suspect something else: brain fog.

Brain fog differs from burnout. It’s that frustrating feeling where your mind feels sluggish, you struggle to focus, and simple tasks take twice as long. It’s like trying to run a marathon in knee-deep mud.

From Foggy to Focused: Harnessing Good Procrastination

This July 1st, I’m declaring war on brain fog and taking back control of my productivity. Here’s my battle plan to leverage “good” procrastination and finally take action:

  1. Identifying the Culprit: Brain fog can have many causes, from stress to lack of sleep. I’ll do some research and identify what might be triggering mine. A visit to the doctor might be in order!
  2. Strategic Breaks: Contrary to popular belief, taking breaks isn’t procrastination – it’s essential for focus and creativity. I’ll schedule abrupt breaks throughout the day to refresh my mind and come back to tasks with renewed energy.
  3. Chunking for Clarity: Just like with burnout, big, overwhelming goals can feel paralysing when you’re foggy. I’ll break down projects into smaller, more manageable tasks. Small wins will boost my confidence and keep me motivated.
  4. Prioritization Power: All tasks do not hold the same level of significance. Brain fog makes focus even more crucial. I’ll prioritize the most important tasks that will yield the biggest results for my developer’s career.
  5. The Accountability Advantage: Sometimes, a little external pressure can be a good thing. I’m sharing this post as a sign of things to come. Knowing you’re all out there, holding me accountable, will be a powerful motivator to stay on track.

Beyond the Boot Camp: Embracing the Tech Ecosystem

But this journey isn’t just about conquering brain fog and writing clean code. It’s about becoming a well-rounded developer, and that means embracing the tech ecosystem. Here’s how I plan to expand my horizons:

The Solopreneur Spirit:

This entire journey has me re-thinking about the traditional employee path. The idea of being a solopreneur, a freelance developer who calls the shots, is becoming increasingly attractive. There’s a freedom and flexibility there that resonates with me. I’ll be researching the solopreneur life, learning the ropes, and, who knows, maybe one day I’ll be sharing my experiences from that side of the fence.

Building Your Dev Community and Finding Your Path:

The tech world can feel isolating, especially for solopreneurs. But it doesn’t have to be! Here’s how I plan to combat the isolation and find my developer tribe:

The Solopreneur Hustle: Making Money Moves

The freedom of the solopreneur life is enticing, but let’s be honest, it doesn’t pay the bills without the “hustle.” Here’s how I plan to turn my skills into cold, hard cash:

The Road Ahead: Let’s Get Coding!

This is just the beginning of my journey. There will be setbacks, there will be roadblocks, and there will probably be a lot of pizzas involved in those late-night coding sessions. But I’m determined to conquer brain fog, embrace the tech ecosystem, and maybe even become a successful solopreneur.

So, are you ready to join me? Follow along as I share my progress, my struggles, and hopefully, my triumphs. Together, let’s ditch the procrastination, launch our tech careers, and code our way to a brighter future! We’ve got this!
