The Weight of “Value” is more important than ever as time moves forward.

I’m in the thick of it. The exhilarating, exhausting, and often demoralizing journey of breaking into the tech industry. Fresh out of a software development bootcamp, armed with newfound skills and an ocean of ambition, I dove headfirst into the bustling tech scene of Sydney.

The initial euphoria of graduation has gradually given way to a complex interplay of excitement and uncertainty. Watching peers and coveted roles in Melbourne, while I grapple with the realities of a non-tech job, has ignited a fire within me. It’s a fire fuelled by the desire to prove my worth, to contribute meaningfully, and to ultimately find my place in this fast-paced world.

Yet, amidst the hustle, a nagging question persists: What is true value in this context? Is it the monetary gain that promises a safety net and the freedom to pursue my passions? Or is it the intrinsic satisfaction of crafting innovative solutions and making a tangible impact?

Right now, I’m trading hours of physical labour for the privilege of learning and growing. It’s a tough pill to swallow, but it’s a necessary step. Every dollar earned is a brick in the foundation of my future. A future where I can dedicate myself entirely to coding, to problem-solving, to building.

The journey has been far from linear. Countless interviews, countless rejections. Each “no” was a punch to the gut, a stark reminder of my vulnerability. The desperation to secure any job, any income, became a haunting reality. It’s been a brutal test of adaptability, forcing me to confront a version of myself I never imagined.

I’ve lost sight of the destination. So consumed by the work grind, the constant applications, and the never-ending pursuit of the next opportunity, I’ve forgotten why I embarked on this journey. It’s time to refocus, to reconnect with my passion for coding, and to remember that the ultimate goal is to build a fulfilling career as a software engineer.

Between January and March, reality hit hard. Rent, food, and necessities were in jeopardy. I had to adapt to survive. Thanks to an incredibly supportive landlord who granted me much-needed time and flexibility, I managed to weather the storm. In hindsight, this period of adversity was a crucible, forging resilience and adaptability.

Now, with a newfound sense of determination, I realise that the time for adaptation is over. It’s time to pursue my tech career with aggression. Five months into this journey, the initial shock has worn off. The fear of the unknown is gradually subsiding. August and September are the new deadlines. This is the moment to seize the opportunity, to leverage the momentum, and to make a decisive push. The window of opportunity is open, and I must CT(make) the most of the opportunity.

This journey is far from glamorous. It’s about resilience, perseverance, and a relentless pursuit of knowledge. It’s about balancing short-term sacrifices with long-term goals. And it’s about finding meaning in every step, no matter how small.

I’m sharing this not for sympathy, but for solidarity. If you’re on a similar path, know that you’re not alone. We’re all navigating uncharted waters, searching for our own definition of value. And in the end, it’s the journey itself, the growth, and the lessons learned that truly shape our worth.

Let’s keep building, learning, and supporting each other. The future is ours to shape.
